STRATEGY
The Institute aims to bring together the most advanced interdisciplinary and inter-institutional knowledge in the world in order to develop new surgical practices, apply these practices to the most challenging afflictions and disseminate this knowledge through teaching and publishing.
ILVR seeks to raise substantial funding from a broad base of individuals and institutions in order to fund innovative research, education and outreach in the field of laryngology and voice restoration. In particular, it seeks over the next five years are to:
- Fund at least $20 million of important research in laryngology and voice restoration, initially in the following four areas but subject to revision as research and clinical practice move forward over the next five years:
- Treatment of vocal-fold scar and restoration of mucosal pliability
- Restoration of mobility to paralyzed vocal folds
- Restoration of mobility of fixed vocal-fold joints (stenosis), especially to remove artificial breathing tubes (tracheotomy)
- Development of new laser technologies and delivery systems to enhance the treatment of mucosal dysplasias and cancers.
- Organize and mount an outstanding and broad-based education and outreach program designed to teach scientists, researchers, physicians and others about laryngology and voice restoration and thereby expand knowledge, improve visibility and accelerate progress in the field
- Develop and maintain a sophisticated and interactive Web-based archive of important research, education and clinical practice parameters related to laryngology and voice restoration, in forms readily available to scientists, researchers, physicians, patients and others
- Prepare annual ILVR Reports on the state of the field of laryngology and voice restoration, including research and education activities, achievements, opportunities and needs
- Develop and coordinate events and activities that highlight achievements in the field, raise awareness of ILVR and contribute to improved awareness of the field.
- Develop relationships with other leading institutions, organizations and individuals interested in, and concerned with, laryngology and voice restoration in the US and abroad
- Mount and fund an ongoing program of research fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital and selected other institutions in the US and abroad
- Develop and maintain on-going relationships/alliances with a broad array of organizations, institutions and individuals interested in and concerned with laryngology, voice restoration, throat diseases and the throat in general
- Know well and have strong relationships with leading foundations, institutions and individuals able to support and further the field of laryngology and voice restoration, in general, and ILVR, in particular.
- Build an exemplary organization design that is known for its effectiveness, efficiency and transparency and can serve as a model for other medical and health research and education organizations.
